About William Smithey Jr

A skilled technician and occasional artist, William Smithey Jr, has, for nearly 25 years, photographed the American West's natural areas - emphasizing National Parks and other Public Lands. The result of these travels is a large library of 4x5 natural history film images many of which are available as high resolution digital files.

More recently Mr. Smithey has accepted select commercial real estate photographic assignments in Sacramento and San Francisco Bay areas. This commercial work is accomplished using Canon Full Frame Digital SLR cameras along with TS-E lenses from 17mm to 45mm.

William Smithey's photographs have appeared in hundreds of publications. Notable among these publications are Sierra Club Books and Calendars, Audubon Calendars, The Nature Conservancy Calendars, BrownTrout Calendars and publications by Impact Photographics. He is the author of six books on natural history. While a technician at Scripps Institution of Oceanography he co-authored several foundational scientific papers on deep sea hydrothermal vents.

Born in Southern California, William Smithey Jr's exploration of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park led to his interest in both natural history and landscape photography. A degree in Biology from Humboldt State University along with his photographic and engineering expertise led to an eight year position as a photographic technician with the Deep Sea Laboratory of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego.

William has traveled the Western United States with both film and digital cameras for nearly 30 years.

He and his wife Andrea live in Northern California.
